Wellington - An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook central New Zealand early on Monday but there were no immediate reports of damage, officials said.
The strong quake, which struck at 4:08 am (New Zealand time), was centred in the Tasman Sea, 160 km northwest of Wellington at a depth of 150 km, the Geological and Nuclear Sciences department reported on its website.
Much of the lower North Island and upper South Island were affected and emergency services said there had been a few reports of items falling off shelves.
